Built in 1873, the building served as the Carleton Protestant General Hospital until its sale in1924, when it became a seminary. Later acquired by the Royal Canadian Navy in1943, the building was used for a variety of purposes, including serving as a recruiting centre during the Korean War. The building was declared surplus to National Defence's needs in 1990; Public Works, charged with its disposal, raised the possibility of demolition in the event they were unable to sell for an "acceptable" price. These threats led to demonstrations by concerned citizens and heritage groups, and the building was eventually sold to a group comprised of Andrex Holdings, Wilberfoss Inc., and Domicile Developments for conversion to loft condominums.
